How does the author characterize Mr Beaver? What means does he use to create his portrait?

  1. John Beaver is one of the major characters in Evelyn‘s Wough book ‘A Handful of Dust’. Though he is already an adult, he lives with his mother at the house in Sussex Gardens. Beaver has a dark little sitting room on the ground floor with the main object there – a telephone. He has no job and no serious interests so he waits for hours in front of the telephone to be invited somewhere, where he would be able to drink and eat for free. Also, he is mostly invited at the last minute, when someone misses a party. That, of course, shows that he is not very rich or successful himself, though his family belong to the, at least, middle-upper class. It is shown, also, by his membership in an exclusive club – ‘Brat’s’. He lacks of self-respect and because of he is stingy, his ‘friends’ either make fun of him, or choose to communicate with him as little as it is possible. Also, Beaver is fond of his mother and depends on her psychologically, as well as in terms of money. He is shown from negative side and makes an impression of weak, unsuccessful and pampered child.

  3. Mr Beaver is a 25-year-old man who lives together with his mother who supports him with money. He is described as a pathetic man who likes sitting by the telephone and waiting for somebody's call and invitation to the party so that he could go there to eat and drink for free. However, he is unwelcome there and unimportant because he is invited to the parties at the last moment. Moreover, he is shut from the club Brat's because the members of this club don't want him to join it. Also, other men play jokes on him because he doesn‘t pay for his drinks. The author describes Mr Beaver with negative attitude about him.

  4. Mr Beaver is described by the author negatively. One of the negative aspects is that Mr Beaver is invited to dinner parties at the last moment. Despite this, he always agrees going to parties in order to get free drinks. This shows that Mr Beaver lacks self-esteem. Another negative aspect is that Mr Beaver is described as a man who does not have a job, is dependent on his mother and does nothing productive in his life. Also, he is that kind of a person everybody avoids being with. Mr Beaver is laughed at and made fun of by other people. All these aspects make up a negative author's description about him.

  5. One of the most important characters of the novel 'A Handful of Dust' is John Beaver. Mr Beaver is twenty- five years old. He lives with his mother at the House in Sussex Gardens. When Mr Beaver left Oxford, he had worked in an advertising agency. Since then he has had no job available hor him. The auther characterizes John Beaver as an interesting and active as well as amusing person. For instance, he spends most of his time near the telephone with the hope that somebody will call him in order to invite him to parties. He likes parties because when somebody asks him to come, he usually does not refuse it. Moreover, Mr Beaver is a person who is sneered at the club Brat's. So, the personality of Mr Beaver makes this novel more attractive and humurous.

  6. The author characterizes Mr Beaver as a negative character. However, Mr Beaver is described in rather a humorous way. He is lazy, shallow and because of this he has no real friends. Mr Beaver's portrait is created by the authors descriptions where we can find some informative adjectives mentioned above(lazy, shallow). Also, the other people and their behaviour towards Mr Beaver add some additional points to the portrait. That is how we know he has no real friends.

  7. Mr.Beaver is a twenty-five years old ma. He lives with his mother only because it saves him at least five pounds a week. It is an Important saving for him because his total income varies around six pounds a week. John left Oxford and also had worked in a advertising agency, but since then no one had been able to find anything for him to do. I think, it shows that he is an irresponsible person and like to live other people expenses, specially his mother's. He has no job and spend or even waste most of the day seatingnear the telephone and hoping to be rung up. Also, John Beaver enjoys going to parties even if he is invited at the last moment, occasionally even later. Club members do not like him and think Beaver ought never to have got into the club at all. I think, he is stingy because he owe ten shillings for drinks for the last month and have not paid till now. In my opinion, he ought to change because his attitude for life and his actions will ruin his life completely.

  8. Author's attitude towards Mr Beaver is negative. When he gives a description of him at the same time the author doesn't miss an apportunity to say something negative about him. He's 25-year old but still lives with mother. Graduated Oxford but doesn't work because he doesn't want. He communicates with other people, goes to the parties, but most invitations comes to him at the last moment. It is like there is nothing good about him. Also the author use Mr Beaver's acquaintances and shows their points of view about him, that is negative too. Like the main word that describes Mr Beaver is pathetic: has no self respect, no job, almost no money, no true firends and he does's see anything bad about it because he doesn't even think about changing somethig.

Other men play jokes on him because he does not pay for drinks. He does not have real friends, money and job. I think that he should do something to improve his life.

  10. John Beaver is a man who despite being 25 years old still lives with his mother in a house in Sussex Gardens. He is described as a passive man as oposed to his mother. Most of the time Beaver spends near his telephone waiting to be rung up and invited to a party where he could eat and drink for free. But since he is usually invited at the last minute it shows that he isn't very popular, nor very important. The fact that he agrees to go even if called at the last minute shows him as a quite pathetic person. Even in the gentelmens club Brat's he isn't welcomed and is shown little respect. The author mostly describes him with a negative attitude.

  11. MR Beaver is one of E. Waugh novel "A Handful of Dust" characters. He is described as a jobless and pathetic person who lives with his mother, although he is an adult. Moreover he lacks self-esteem and is unwelcomed in parties. Mr Beaver doesn't work, saves money and gets allowance. He goes to parties but is invited at the last moment when someone can not come. The key element of his life is telephone because he spends a lot of time near it waiting for a call of invitation to any pary.

  12. A 25-year-old "boy" John Beaver lived in Sussex Gardens with his mother. I call him a boy, because he was looking into world through the child's eyes. As a 25-year-old man he should be responsible for his life, he ought to have a job, but he did not. Instead he got allowance. Waiting near the telephone, which is important element of his dark little sitting room, to be invited to the parties at the last moment was his main activity. He never paid for his drinks and food in the parties and he was laughed at because of that. A pathetic life and behavior of Mr. Beaver leads the author and the other characters of the book to look at him from a negative point of view.

  13. John Beaver was characterized as a pathetic person who lived with his mother in Sussex Gardens. After he experienced a slump while working in advertising agency, Mr. Beaver become desperate and all day long he was waitting near the telephone in his room, and doing nothing all the time. He lived on his mother's incomes, so it shows that he was irresponsible person. People who surrounds him did not like him at all,he gets the invitations to the party at the last moment and some people made fun of him, e.g Jock Grant-Menzies in the pub said that Mr. Bever will pay for the drinks although he already was owing some money for the barman. This situation shows that Mr Beaver did not had true friends and he lived with that without understanding it.

  15. Author's attitude towards John Beaver is negative and it makes a reader not to like him as well. The author does not describe Mr. Beaver in particular; he uses other devices for describing Beaver: dialogs, his room description, lifestyle peculiaryties, other characters' opinion of him. So we can see, that John Beaver is a frivolous, pathetic parasite. He lives under his mother's roof, lives from the interests, never pays for himself, comes to the parties even if he knows nobody wants him. One of the main things for him in his life is the telephone, in front of which he sits and waits for a call to know that somebody could not come to a party. John Beaver is a simple pawn and nobody has something to like him for.

He isn't employed, his most important income is the allowance. Beaver mostly sits at home near the telephone and waits for someone to call him and invite to a party. Other people probably do not respect him much, for example gentlemen at the Brat's club who make fun of him because Beaver wouldn't pay for the drinks. The author characterises Beaver as a person who is not very mature, serious and grown-up man. He lacks responsibility and self-respect.

  17. Mr Beaver is one of the major characters of a novel "A Handful of Dust" by Evelyn Waugh. The author draws Mr Beaver as a negative character because of the lack of self-esteem, moral and depending on his mother, who supports him with money and he can keep his hands in pockets. Also, he doesn't even think about getting a job, because being at home saves him at least 5 pounds a week, thus Mr Beaver lives on the allowance from the government, and he doesn't worry about that at all. He likes his lifestyle. He likes going to dinner parties, drinking and being with people. But however, people don't like him. This is shown by the situations like inviting him to a dinner party at the last moment only when there is one seat left or 'joke' that Mr Beaver will pay for all the drinks. People just think, that Mr Beaver is a layabout.
