Despite being 25 years old John Beaver still lives with his mother in a house in Sussex Gardens. He is described as pathetic and a passive man as opposed to his mother. John is dependent on her and do nothing productive in his life. Most of the time he spends sitting near the telephone with the hope that somebody will call him in order to invite to parties where he could drink for free. Mr Beaver is not well-liked among his friends, because their often make fun of him and give invitations only in the last moment, they do not respect him at all. All in all, this character is described as not very serious and mature man with a lack of self-esteem.
ReplyDeleteThe author's attitude towards Mr. Beaver is quite negative. E. Waugh describes Mr. Beaver as an unemployed young man who still lives with his mother. The author implies in this character such features as vanity, (Mr. Beaver likes parties very much and does not hesitate to go to a party even if he is invited instead another person who could not participate. One more negative feature is lack of self-respect (John Beaver does not make every effort to find a job. Moreover, he is a shameless guy because his mother still supports him with money). Also, Mr. Beaver is portrayed as a socialite and a shallow-minded person because his the most favourite activity is only to go to Brat's club and parties, meet people who actually does not like and even mock he. All these features form Mr. Beaver as a negative character in this story.
ReplyDeleteJohn Beaver is a major character in the novel „A Handful of Dust“. He is a 25 year old man, who lives with his mother in Susex Garden. Mr. Beaver calles her 'mumsy'. He adores her, because she always helps by supporting him with money and 'good' advice. He is described as a not very seriouse man who likes sitting by the telephone and waiting for somebody's call and invitation to the party, which usualy he gets on the last minute. He loves going to such parties because he can eat and drink there for free. Mr.Beaver is discribed as a pathetic person, who has neither self-confidence nore self-respect.
